    the 1100 is 4 years old, bought from dell. tag fx78toj. gave no trouble until now.

    If you read the link that BosonMichael gave it says in it that someone else had the same problem and was due to the hard drive being knackered.

    If I were you I would get on to dell customer support, if you tell them the service tag number then you will be able to get the password of them.

    But it maybe that you need a new drive.

    James, you still haven't said whether you own this computer or not. If you don't know what CMOS is, your best bet is to take the computer back where you bought it (with the receipt) and see if they can repair it under warranty.

    EDIT: Sorry...didn't see the responses on page two of this thread.
