Correct me if Im wrong, but if you add the 'domain controller' role to a Win 2003 server doesnt it create the DNS entries for you? :blink

Its been a while since Ive installed a stand alone DC! :biggrin

Edit: This link answers my own Q

I found the folder, never noticed the system32, and done what it asked for in the .txt file, ran the things through run command and it said Successfully done or something...

i re-ran the setup for DNS and still back to square one asking for the DNSPROF.mof

when i click on add role, under DNS and DHCP it says No under Configured...

Just remembered the last DC I set up, it was for my 70-290 lab, doh!

To be honest there wasn’t much to it, I picked contoso.com as the domain name and walked away as the AD was being created.

I noticed your domain is domain.test.vmc, I don’t *think* that should make any difference but cant you go for something very basic instead? You could go for test.local or even contoso.com as MS uses this in the Press books.

It might be worth installing the server again from scratch.

    1) Rebuild the server
    2) Give the server a static I.P
    3) Add ‘Domain Controller’ as a role
    4) Add a DHCP scope
    5) Reboot
    6) Have a beer

    Job done! :biggrin

I might just delete the bugger and start with something easier... any suggestions?

I typed in DCPROMO in the run command, click on next and now it says my AD is removed from my computer....

Okay well you have demoted it, so it's no longer a domain controller.

Now you can run DCPROMO again and this time watch carefully for the bit about DNS and let the wizard install and configure DNS.
