    721.

Made up. Got stung with some nasty questions at the end and thought they were all wrong. Turns out I somehow got them all right, and it obviously got me over the threshold.

Gotta do 70-646 now before the end of Feb or I'll lose my booster pack.

    Thanks guys.

Are you working on your 646 now too, Ce? They're retiring in July, just in case you didn't know.

If by "working on" you mean dragging my heels for over a year, yes I am working on it :/. Yeah I've seen the July retirement and know I need to get my ass in gear or else lose out on the MCSA and then have to start all over for the 2012 generation.

    What's your study technique/method like?

My study method for the other 2 was read MS Press, read technet and lab extensively and then measureup for a couple of days before the exam.

This one is different to the others though. I can't quite work out what I need to study from the exam objectives. So I'm just going to read the MS-Press book, try to find anything i'm unsure about on technet, do loads of practice exams, then just sit the exam and see what it's like. If I pass, all good, if not I have resits.. I'll do another resit a week later if my score's close, if not I'll have to re-evaluate my approach. Maybe do some labbing. Although i feel like I've probably labbed most things from the previous 2 anyway.. so yeah. I'm a little worried about this one if I'm honest. I failed the 685 4 times and that was also in the 'PRO' series of exams.

Apparently the structure of this exam is different too.

    What about you?

Yeah it's good that you're coming in fresh with the 640 and the 642 still rattling around in the back of your brain. Almost similar to you, I passed the 680 first time and it took me 3 attempts for the 685 ;).

My approach is pretty identical to yours - MS Press front to back. I now do the end-of-chapter labs before reading the chapter, as I find it easier to Do-Then-Learn rather than Learn-Then-Do. I used to take notes in Word going chapter by chapter, whereas now I use OneNote and still read the book in sequence but organise my notes by technology rather than by chapter. That book is the longest part for me and I often lose faith/commitment about half way through.

Then once the book is finished, kick in to gear with combining Technet with labbing, going through the technologies again but seeing on Technet the vitals that were missed in the book, and doing those methods for myself in the lab. A few practice exams and then throw myself at the main exam and see what result I get. Then obviously, as anyone with sense does, if I fail then I go back and look up the questions that came out of nowhere and took me by surprise.

I think we're lucky they aren't retiring the 70-417 upgrade exam at the same time as the 646, or it would be really intense.

Sat it today and failed with a 629.

Actually pleased with the score, just wanted to get a feel for it before the booster pack ran out. The MS Press book is very good in terms of mapping to the exam content. Hyper-V is probably good thing to have a look at on technet if you haven't already, though.

If you haven't used measureup for 646 I'd strongly recommend it. It will prepare you very well for the question types that will be thrown at you. It's different to other MS exams in that respect, so it gives you a really good idea of what kind of information you'll need to know.

Work's very quiet. On a good day I can put in 5-6 hours. I haven't done any labbing at all for this one though. It's really not as high maintenance as the other 2. I was expecting a lower score than I got.

Damn you for being the man I want to be :p
Right, that settles it, I too am throwing more of my working day in to getting this done. The joys of being a 1-Man Band I.T department in an office by myself at the end of a corridor
