    Hello,

Some good news that I would like to share; picked up a gig supporting a small business on a part time basics.

    Setup is as follow:

    2 MLL110 G5 Running Vmware Server 2.0 / Linux
    3 Servers 1 DC / 1 File Server 1 VPN

    A few workstations.

Glad as this will allow me to add valuable infrastructure experience on my CV, which should in turn help me move to next stage in my career.

    Pizza time!

    Thanks mate.

The MD of this place was talking to a friend of mine moaning about the support cost for his network, so he told him about me.
Went to see the bossman yesterday and started today!

Currently VPN'ed in, working out the setup and what needs to be done.

First task is to get some backup strategy setup as currently there is none!

Indeed, but if they have agreed for him to assist on a part time basis then he must be available for those times agreed, surely?

True, but a server can go belly up at any time...

I am a part-time volunteer sys admin for a charity the first thing i did was set up redundancy so they could cope with serious issues until i could get there.

I used to support several small organisations (on a fixed schedule) and it was understood (unofficially) that if something went pear shaped then I would get to them as soon as I could, or fix it over the phone (even on someone elses time). They all got that kind of deal so noone objected. Most issues could be resolved over the phone anyway.

    Fair point Sparky.

I agreed with the MD that there will be times when I will not be available. The Solution we came up with is to find a setup that will allow as little impact as possible on the business when things go wrong.
We will invest on another ML where I will add another DC for redundancy...I am still working on a decent distaster recovery plan.

Floppy disks are vastly under-rated and you can get them really cheap wholesale these days! :)
