DELL Perc RAID cards tend to go cheap secondhand.

Other RAID controllers come from LSI, Adaptec, HighPoint, HP, Promise etc.

HP E200i is a reasonable bet. Entry level so don't expect the best performance, but make sure you get it with 128mb bbwc and stick more than four disks on it for decent RAID5 performance. I picked mine up for about £150

I would have a look at 3ware as well, I got my 9500s 8 for about £70 and my 9650 for about £30, the first is a PCI-X card, the second a PCI-E that's used to connect to a 3ware Sidecar box.

    Both fully supported in OF2.3

Nice! Mind you, mine's about two years old, they were probably a bit pricier then. You'll also need to try and source the 4-way adapter cables - from memory they were a bit of a b*tch to find (part number was nigh-on impossible to get hold of)

Got pissed off with it, every couple of days it would just keep doing the command abort crap(ESXi host started freezing when this was all going down). I thought I had it all sorted but it just kept poking its head up.

Strange, it never does it with my vsphere environment. Sure you don't have a disk going?

Nope it was all brand new

    ML110 Xeon
4x HP Enterprise Storage SATA Disks(483096-001)
    1x Intel Dual Port NIC

    OF 2.3
Software RAID(due to not having a compatible card at the time)
1 Large Lun shared between 2 ESXi host
1 primary NIC and 1 for backup

I've been on the OF forums for a couple of days trying all the suggestions, some helped a little but none resolved the problem

    Software RAID? only 4 spindles?

Damn - that's two reasons for poor performance right there.

Yeah it was only for a couple of VM for my lab nothing to fancy to start with, perfomance was ok when it worked but once the iscsi_trgt: cmnd_abort(1148) error started all hell broke loose, I'll be chucking more disk in when I get a sidecar

Thanks Simon and Zeb for all your help with this :D, if I can't get the sidecar then I'm sure I'll be able to sort something out as the card I got has 8 ports but just need somewhere to site the disks, I must say though DSS is pretty smart.

Is it free or did you pay for the full 4tb\8tb\16tb version?

Also worth noting, the Sidecar requires a card with a Multilane connector, both my 9500 and 9650 have ML connections but I do know that some 9500s cards only have original sata connectors.
