Now I'm Confused

A little earlier, I was involved in a thread that was closed. I'm a little confused at the reason. As far as I know, we weren't violating any rules. The conversation had moved on past the point of vulgarities and anger, leaving only a few members exchanging different points of view on a controversial subject. Is that not the purpose of a forum?

This kid never had a chance anyway. He was different. To begin, he had the nerve to use the name god as a username. And he was younger. Wasn't pruned to be a businessman. His punctuation and grammar was unforgiving. And if you approach him about all of his faults, he gets angry.

If some of you get a little time to kill, look back at some of the threads he was involved in. Most of his posts begin with simple comments or questions. If you take a moment to really read them, even without the punctuation, they make perfect sense. And I don't believe he ever got rude with anyone until he was confronted by another.

I won't say that his behavior would be acceptable in a corporate office, or even a doughnut shop as far as that goes. But when you have members that will go out of their way to attack another, you have more important issues already on hand. And that's another behavior that is seldom tolerated by most businesses.

You know what would be a hoot? I mean a real riot. Maybe this seemingly inexperienced, ill mannered, youngerster is really a third or fourth year psycology major gathering material for a study lab. Oh, what a paper he could write.

What do you do with someone that may be a little different? I'm probably older than most of you. Does that make me different? Oh, but then I'm from the States. Now, I must really be a strange bird. Am I in danger of being banned for that? Or maybe for trying to befriend someone that many of you could not accept?

Many of you were annoyed by his presence, but looking back, who was really at fault. Sometimes adults need to behave more like adults.

I don't think he has been banned because of his name or his punctuation (otherwise most of us would be kicked out especially me)

I think it was most of his posts where put in proper posts and contained utter dribble.

Also he could not take any telling wether it was done nice or bad.

I'm from the States, so is Tripwire45 and a few other people too. Trip and I are both in our 50's. If you had been here longer you would know that I've gotten upset with threads that had no purpose other than to mock someone's problems with spelling and grammar that come from dyslexia. You'd also know if you had been here longer that I've been on the receiving end of being "different" because I'm someone who takes offense at MS's business practices rather vocally, and I'm an open source/Linux advocate right here in the middle of a MS certification forum. Is that "different" enough for you?

god/eternalangel knew what he was doing. He was deliberately baiting the process as he could communicate very well when he wanted to. He just didn't want to. That shows a lot of disrespect for a lot of people, and that I won't tolerate. I wouldn't tolerate that from my grandkids(I have 8 of them and another on the way), and I won't tolerate it from anyone else either. Tolerating that kind of behavior does no good for the person indulging in it. All it teaches them is that they can get away with it. And, that hurts them far more long term than telling them to shape up if they want to fit in.

 

That's it? I looked back through several threads. Must have missed it.

I'm a little curious though. Can anyone direct me to any of these offensive posts? I'd like to make sure I don't cross any lines should I come under attack.

By the way, is that an official response?

What the heck are you talking about? Official response? Where do you see anything that indicates I'm a moderator or administrator? Where have I implied that I am any of those things?

You've taken offense at everything I've had to say. So be it. I tried to be constructive with god, he just had no desire to listen to anything. He wanted to do what he wanted to do, and the rest of this "society" could be hanged for all he cared. How the rest of this "society" is at fault for that is beyond me....

 

1.No, these forums are not here to debate controversial topics (the clue is in the title)
2.You never ACTUALLY found out his age Bill, not that this would matter anyway, there have been 15 year olds posting here with respect for the other members.
3.He was asked very NICELY at first if he could improve his punctuation FOR HIS OWN GOOD. This made absolutely no difference because his posts were mostly out of context and talking about Philosophy and just babbling(again, the clue to the purpose of the forum is in the title).
4.If his posts make sense to you then I'm sorry but you are in a very small minority. Even if they did make sense, telling everyone the meaning of life in somebody's technical questions isn't really done.
5.Ive got a degree in psychology mate and can assure you this was no experiment. Even if it was, what would the paper say?: "I tried to mess with some techs heads but they banned me"? wow, I feel stupid now bill.
5.No one cares if he is different, but this is not a bar or club where any topic goes, This is a forum for certification information. If you are asked to follow the rules but totally ignore the request, then go on to say that our job is to "serve" him, and we should all adopt his text chat, then you deserve what you get.
6.Ask any member here what they would expect from the other members if they behaved like this.

Brother Bill, as a admin on another froum, I can tell you things happen behind the iron curtain, that us reg users never see or know. I do know the staff here has not banned of closed any threads because someone may be different. I'm sure they have their reasons, weather they will share them or not is and always will be their choice. However, I can swear to you that they have always been fair to users. However, there is always more to something then meets the eye my new friend.

Well Freddie, that comment wasn't directed at you. I was hoping someone could elaborate on the reason for banning him. Your post just came in ahead of it.

And stuPeas, I apologize, I thought that was the purpose of posting in an off-topic forum. My mistake. It seems that was a mistake made by EternalAngel as well.

Mitzs, I was a moderator on another forum and left because of what I felt were improper actions of an administrator. Things do happen.

Like I said, I'm curious. I've yet to find a post that started with "utter dribble" or where he wasn't the first to come under fire. I thought maybe someone could point it out. I may have entirely the wrong impression of this person. He did state that he was a young student. Could be college, could be younger. Frankly, in the few attempts I had to talk with him, there were no problems and I've found a couple of threads where the conversation was rather civil. I just feel like he may have gotten a raw deal.

Either way, he's sure not to be the last.

BB has just confirmed my thoughts and what I was trying to get across on the other thread. That although GAV's intentions were honourable (i hope I spelt that right) on starting a thread about GOD. You are damaging the image of CF.

Do you really want members and lurkers and future members to think badly of CF?

Would anyone owning a IT business slag off a customer in front of another customer, no you pull them to one side away from the public. It's the same with the forum, people come here for help and friendly advice instead they see negative criticism.

This has already happen on TU do you really want it to happen here?

You thought i was having ago at GAv and the staff well I wasn't I was just protecting the image of CF and trying to get across something that the members of the staff told me when I arrive here. The point is, this is a technical forum with a specific area of interest - certification.

There is considerable leeway for people who want to post 'off topic', jokes or whatever.

However, when people divert threads with unrelated material, or just post nonsense, it annoys people.

As has been said before, this is not a chatroom.

From my experience here, staff are reluctant to step in or introduce draconian measures such as banning members or locking threads unless they percieve them to be a serious threat to the general status quo - and I think they do a pretty damn good job.

But neither are we the united nations, given to uphold the rights of the downtrodden.
If someone acts like a tw@t and gets banned, I don't see why we should do any soul searching about the issue.
