    Being a grandparent definitely doesn't mean you appear to be 'old' - my older brother was a grandparent by the time he was 40. I have met many people both men and women who have been grandparents in their 40's and even in their 30's. I am age 41 and have a niece aged 36. I was an uncle by age 5 - so I'm used to it.
