Switch on the PC, after post tap the F8 key a few times and then you will be presented with some boot options. Select 'safe mode' and see if the PC boots up ok.

Thanks - have tried f8 but honestly it's not even going through post at start up - just goes immediately to the fancy pc system banner with bios options at the bottom in grey e.g. f2-f12 as i say when i press f2 it suggests entering set up then freezes and doesn't go any further ?????

You are going into the BIOS setup there, not Windows setup.

It may be that a hardware device is stopping the PC posting correctly. Disconnect any non essential parts (e.g CD-ROM drive) and then boot the PC.

Have you made any recent changes to the PC?

Interesting because the hard disk drive has just failed altogether and had to remove the disk manually - will disconnect non essential peripherals as you suggest and re-run the system - thankyou for bearing with me
