This forum looks priceless – as a resource and a great place to get advice.

I’m exciting about posting something in the jobs section soon. I am looking for someone who has technical qualifications but also an entrepreneurial eye, based in London. First of all I need to understand the qualifications that are available.

I’ll have a look around and will probably find a rundown of the various certificates somewhere...

I am looking for a bit of an alrounder - a technically gifted person who can adapt their existing knowledge to new tasks etc - to help me start a new company. There will be a number of different areas that they will need to cover, more on this later.

A crutial part of this role will be in setting up, maintaining and in time overseeing the technical support side of the business. Normally I wouldn't be overly concerned with certification, more interested in the individual and their experience etc. But in this case I would like to demonstraite some certification to outside parties for the technical support.

My question is, what certificates do you think are most applicable to desktop technical support of mostly standard home computers?

Commonplace desktop support technical certifications include:-

CompTIA's A+
Microsoft's MCDST (Microsoft XP Specific)

Though I could mess around quite happily with my home PCs prior to gaining any certification. *shrugs* Depends what you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply. So what do peopple think of this certificate then, not the most difficult to achieve? Or it doesn't equip you that well? I should have mentioned that all machines will be Vista (or a few Mac osX).

The sort of things that might require attention are things like fixing drivers, using team viewer if necessary, restoring a system etc...

 

If they are all Vista, then in addition to the A+ certification Qs mentioned, I'd recommend the MCTS: Windows Vista - Configuration certification.

If your customers are businesses, the next step past the MCTS is the MCITP: Enterprise Support Technician certification.
If your customers are home users, the next step past the MCTS is the MCITP: Consumer Support Technician certification.
