I've made some cryptic comments to a writing project over the past several weeks and now that I've submitted my final draft and it's being sent to the publisher, I guess I can talk about it. I was asked to contribute to an update for one chapter in a text on TCP/IP. The chapter in question is called: "TCP/IP, NETBIOS, AND WINS". This will be a second edition and the chapter needed to be updated for Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server.

What was facinating wasn't so much the research and writing, though I did learn alot from that, but the whole process of working with an editor and developing the graphic content. I had to download a demo of a packet sniffer to do some of the exercises in the text and download a screen capture demo to create the graphics of the lab results. It was really fun a lot of the time and frustrating some of the time.

The editor I worked with was very interactive and encouraging. After the manuscript (including the chapter I contributed to) is submitted, I'll have to wait until they either approve it or ask for further changes. Eventually, I'll actually get paid. :)

The best part is that the editor liked my work and says there will very likely be future projects for me from them. This obviously won't being in regular pay, but it is a nice supplement. I'd feel better if I were working in an IT production environment where I could draw on my day-to-day technical experiences, but perhaps that too will come.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with the group. Thanks for listening.

Excellent, I'm made up for you.

It can't hurt to have it on your CV, either.

Sounds like a good thing Trip, I guess your getting paid, learning and getting your name published. What more could you ask? Keep us upto date on this one, I'd be interested to hear more as things develop.

Thanks Sandy, but those talents don't apparently include deciphering British idiom. :)
