I may be being cynical here but have any of us regular forum members ever seen a thread from a new member that gets replied to but the new member doesn't respond until he/she logs in a 2nd time? and you can quite clearly see from who's online that they are looking at the thread they created.

Is it because these new members do not know what the refresh button does or am I being cynical?

New members press F5 every once in a while to see if someone has replied to you.:D

I doubt it. If it was true then i refuse to be the one to train the whole world how to refresh a webpage lol !!

It's bad enough at work with the extremely low levels of computer skills on display.

    Shocking.......

They may of course subscribe to the thread and when a reply is posted, they will get an email from the forum telling them that there is a reply.

    Probably

So are there people who post queries then strare at them for ages without replying?

It shows up on the who's online page or the circle next their name is green :D

I wonder how many people do subscribe to their threads.

Most people who join discussion groups don't post back after the first time. If you could see all of the member names in the database, you'd be surprised at the small percentage that regularly post. It's just part of the nature of discussion forums. I suspect we have a much larger population of "lurkers", even those who are official members, than we do of "participators". Kind of like an iceberg.

I suppsoe so, I often log in and go to the who's online screen before anything else and there is often more guest users than logged in users especially on a weekend and early hours of the mornings.

or... and heres a crazy thought. Perhaps they post, then move onto look at another thread/site, and come back to look at their thread when it gets a reply.

Now, I dont know about you, but im not so desperate for a reply to my thread that I feel the need to sit mashing the F5 key until someone responds.

ultimately though, does it really matter how they choose to browse the web? everyone has their own browsing habits, and it doesnt impact upon your experience.

Another thing to remember is there is a delay before the user disappears off the who's online, so they could still appear to be looking at the forum :)

This is most likely due to Americans lurking on the forums, different time of day for them, they are probably just lurkers like any one else. I would be on at weird times as well.... in fact most of the time I'm on no one else is since I'm in Japan.
