I've noticed that there are a lot of people who post to individual new members every time they join the board saying 'hi'.

Well, I think that's an artificial way of boosting post counts, and never do it on any board I visit, so, just for the record, I'd like to say 'Hi' to all new members on CF.

Just thought I'd better post that before any n00bs get the hump when I reply to their posts thinking "who's this tosser - he never even said 'hello' to me when i walked through the door..."

    :blink

Maybe the mods could make this a sticky - or do some other clever php-type-thang that automatically pops up a big 'Hi from Zeb!' window whenever someone makes a new post in this forum :biggrin

I have mixed feelings about saying 'hi' to new members.

On one hand it is nice when joining a new place to be greeted.

On the other, as you say, it could be used to inflate post-counts.

I've gone back and forth between these positions here on CF.

I often apply an extra rule - if several people have already greeted the new member I won't always add to the thread.

    Harry.

I've often thought this too, I have to admit. But see, I dont place any importance on your post count, so I dont mind too much (and even occassionally post welcomes myself).

Hi Zeb. why dont you pull up a chair, and welcome to the forum. Oh, and whilst you are at it, why dont you tell us a bit about yourself, and what you are looking for here. :biggrin

This forum never seems to amaze me, if it isn't one member saying every new members should introduce themselves it's another complaining people only say hello to rack up their post counts!

As Baba said it's not the quantity of posts it's the quality.

In my opinion its just polite, when I got a welcome to the boards a while back, it helped me feel welcome and want to be a part of the community here on CF. I try to welcome any new member so they hopefully feel the same, regardless of post counts. To be honest, I rarely even look at post counts, I look more towards reputation points, but thats just me!

Oh, welcome to CF btw Zeb :)

What does how many posts someone have to do with anything. I have never really used many online forums before I use this to get help and information from people mainly as most people here have been there done that so to speak, hopeful when I have more experience and knowledge I will be able to help people the same way.

I always thought it's quite polite to say hello to someone when they say hello to you maybe thats just me.

    Shall everyone do that then.

    It is Rob!
It's the polite thing to do and in some ways puts this forum apart from other forums on the web. Some don't even post a reply to your question on those forums.
That's feels crap, especially when you've just signed up. I don't think Zeb means anything by it. It's like his title says, he's being a Miserable ol' git and likes having a moan about it!:biggrin :p

Or is he just trying to increase his post count???:p :biggrin
