I have just started a ciw web manager course with skills train, i am really interested in web design although i only have experience in using frontpage but i realise i will have to move on quite a lot to become a web designer these days and amup for that i started the same night the rep enroled me and ive finished my 1st TMA but have 2 wait up 21 days for my tutors details so i can submit it, and apparently they mark it and send it back with a code to unlock the 2nd one, the forums have been interesting,i have read more positive than negative comments but can anyone who had passed the course and possibly have a job thru it, answer a few questions please?

How long did you take to complete the course?

Roughly how many hours a week did you study?

What kind of salary does a newly certified student earn to start with?

If you finished the course before the time stated by the rep did you stop paying for it right away?

Could you (with your web design knowledge) start your own personal web design business right now?

    Hi Malky1888,

Welcome to the world of web design, development and management.

How long did you take to complete the course?

Never have, been doing it since about 1997. Should take about a year, get qualified then for the rest of your life, You will never stop learning as long as the interest is there.

Roughly how many hours a week did you study?

None it was an interest that was a hobby that turned into a passion. To answer what you need to do - As much as is possible, but make sure you play around with what you learn. So basically very waking hour.

What kind of salary does a newly certified student earn to start with?

None, you need to create a good portfolio and demonstrate to employers that you know your stuff. Volunteer for stuff, do a friends site etc.

If you finished the course before the time stated by the rep did you stop paying for it right away?

No, your are committed to the contract that you have signed. Read the small print to see if you can pay the fees off earlier

Could you (with your web design knowledge) start your own personal web design business right now?

Yes, if you can get the customers and have the skills

I may be a bit negative in some of the answers but do not be disheartened. If you have the interest and the skills you can make it.

    1. Make sure that you build up a portfolio of sites demonstrating various skills.

    2. Show that you can manage a server (important)

    3. Be patient, it helps

    4. The basics have been the same since about 1998 its the technology that has changed.

    5. Never give up.

    6. Get involved with a dedicated web forum, you will get real world practical advice globally.

    7. I support the CIW course as I wish that my choice had been that way. They are technically sound but one thing that you need is imagination and a curious mind with an artistic ability for the design side.

The cert will give you the necessary skill and knowledge, unfortunately web design is not just technical, it is intuitive, you have to be able to design.

Good luck, have fun and experiment, the best way to learn.
