I am preparing for the OS by filling in the Comptia A+ OS exam objectives. And I really appreciate the help I have been given here. I am having trouble filling out this area of Comptia objectives.

    Section 2.3
    Content may include the following:
    o Boot Sequence
    o Files required to boot
    o Boot steps (9.x, NT-based)

In particular Boot steps what is it asking me here?

I would guess it means the PC boot process

    ie

    CPU senses power
    CPU starts BIOS
    POST
CPU searches for boot files in HD,FD or CD etc and starts OS

When they say boot sequence, i believe that are on about the order of the boot sequence in BIOS. cdrom, floppy, harddisk, or floppy, cdrom, harddisk or whatever the sequence is..

An excellent indepth discription of the windows XP boot process can be found here:

    http://www.geocities.com/asoke_dasgupta/boot-xp.html

you really should check that, its good stuff.

for the O/S exam the questions will be about the sequence AFTER the bootstrap loader locates the MBR and turns control over to NTLDR

Try this, get two blank postcards, write down the windows 9x boot sequence on one and NT/2000/XP sequence on the other. Revise from these cards. Well it worked for me.

    good luck:D
