Does this mean we should wait another few months until taking the exam so we get the latest version? Should we buy the books after January so we get the latest editions?

    Thanks.

It just means that the exam is going to be updated. Comptia exams don't expire so which verison you do is totally up to you. There is always an overlap between the existing exams and the new exams for a period of time, so you don't need to worry too much about it.

Comptia exam/courses/books are vendor specific, whereas Microsoft certs are gear up towards MS technology. While there is some overlap, there are things that will be covered by Comptia that isn't covered by MS, added to that Comptia certs do not expire and are not vendor/version specific.
