Its not really a Cable device, hence the quotes 'Cable'. It just means its not a combined ADSL router, the WAN port is a RJ45 ethernet and not a RJ11 phone, it also means there is not an in built ADSL modem which is what you get with an ADSL router.

Pah - Visio, I s*** it. I knocked up a network diagram last week with four sites, interconnected by backhauls, vpns, mpls and god knows what. Did it all in paint. It looked the nuts as well - honest

That is so cool. Yeah, it looks like a 4 year old drew it (and did the spelling), but it is so...so...retro (or preschool, take your pick). I love it. :biggrin

    Kobem,

Honestly I would get a router in your place. It looks like you really want to have your laptop running wirelessly so might as well go with a wireless router such as the Linksys WRT54G. AP will cost your more with purchasing a wirless card for your pc like Harry said and unless you get a wireless switch which cost more then the router you better off going with a router.

Throw the modem away>Buy Wireless Router (you can plug ethernet cables in it too  ) >Connect your desktop up using a ethernet cable> Connect your laptop via wireless>Hurraz yous iz netwrks nginar

You have just answered your own question. Which is why you don't want a WAP.

Ok. You said that your modem only has 1 ethernet port and one regular RJ11 port (to connect to your phone line connector on the wall) Correct?

WAP has to connect to the modem in order to be able to provide an internet connecton to your your laptop and desktop computer, correct?

WAP uses 1 ethernet connector to connect to either a router or in your case a modem. So if you decide to go with a WAP that means you're going to have to use the 1 ethernet connector you have on your modem. WAP only has one LAN connector to connect to the modem nothing else, unless there are some out there that have multiple LAN connections. From the ones I've used in the past such as the Linksys WAP54g only have one connector so you can't connect anything else to them.

So the only other option to connect your computer to a WAP would be a wireless card for your computer.

Firstly - Get a router as suggested.

You now have two options for connecting both your laptop and your PC.

Laptop can be hard-wired (through ethernet cable) to the router.
    OR
Laptop can connect wirelessly to the router.

PC can be hard-wired (through ethernet cable) to the router.
    OR
PC can connect wirelessly to the router via the use of a wireless network card.

    Nuff said.

No we didn't. You specified that you wanted to keep your ADSL modem. So we suggested a 'cable' wireless router to *add* to the modem.

You *could* get an ADSL wireless router if you changed your mind and didn't need to keep your present modem.

    Harry.

All that said, he's still going to need to make sure he talks his DSL/ISP provider(s) to make sure all of the configurations settings are connect when he replaces the modem with the router (rooter?). I just switched ISPs and it took about 30 minutes on the phone with the tech support guy to make the switch over.

    Why Computers Sometimes Crash
    by Dr. Seuss

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk,
then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom.
