I have XP pro using AOL broadband, I always had the messenger services switched off to stop the dreaded grey popup boxes every 30 seconds, this all worked fine until my little bro installed MSN messenger so he could chat with his chums. I switch it off Control Panel, Admin Tools, Sevices and then select Messenger service as off.
I presume this will mean MSN messenger will no longer work and it seems to just reactivate by itself, Is there any way around this?
    Any help most appreciated

Install a software firewall to stop the dreaded grey popup boxes every 30 seconds, ZoneAlarm seems to be highly recommended. The Windows Messenger Service uses port 135 to deliver messages, so you can kill messages without disabling the service.

um, no firewall would be neccasary

    Microsoft Messenger

and Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger are two different things

the messenger service is used to send netbios alert message to other machines on the network (and more recently for spam)

the messenger SERVICE should stay disabled
it should not hinder MSN messengers ability to work

    last time i checked :)
