Really? Well, then I must ask you a question along that line of thought. Wasn't your very first post on this thread a rather inauspicious attempt to stay out of a "slanging" match?

Second, you claim open source advocates are always slinging invective, but the only one slinging invective on this thread has been you. Your first post started it, and your other posts have continued it, albeit in a reduced sense and much more subtlely, but it has continued right down the line.

Tell me, Mitzs, if you were renting a house would you be upset with the landlord if he came in unannounced and just started modifying your living quarters and installing cameras so he could watch what you do, and did it under the guise of saying that people were stealing from him, so he was going to protect his property?

You think that landlord would be overstepping his rights just a tad and violating yours? In effect, this is what all the MS WGA crap and modifying systems that are explicitly configured to NOT update automatically is doing.

Ummm.... That's what this is about. People have been disabling Windows update, and their systems are being modified anyway. You don't care that way you configure your system is being flat out ignored?

My absolute last word on this.

I don't just set the Windows Update service to download and not install (like the article the post links to does) I disable it COMPLETELY - by setting the BITS and WUAUSERV services to 'disabled'.

Awww, jeesh freedy. You and I have hashed this out over and over again in the last couple of years. Really hun, my mind has not changed since the last time you made me yell at you about this subject on this site as a matter of fact.

So for the sake of our friendship which I do appreciate, I will not discuss MS vs Linux anything with you, ok? To me you are just one of the linux gurus I know. And if I ever have any questions about it or a promble with it, you will be at the top my list I will seek help from. But all else is off limits for the preservation of our friendship. :thumbleft

If you don't like it, you don't have to live there... especially when there's free housing available. You just have to want to move badly enough.

Maybe not, but if he was entitled to via the tennency agreement, there wouldn't be a whole lot you could do, other than move out or just whinge about it to other people.

If however the landlord let himself in and told me that he was just servicing the boiler so that I wouldn't die of carbon monoxide poisoning, I guess my attitude would be different.

Just an fyi for you, zeb.

The rest of the article from microsoftwatch.com here. So, zeb, your wishes have been ignored, and MS came in through a back door and did it despite you disabling the service. Glad to know you're OK with that.....

    I can't believe I'm doing this...

This blog post clearly indicates that when users are NOT using the WU service (me) they are NOT affected. If, at some point, I run Windows Update again - re-enabling the WU service and BITS (which I periodically do, usually about a week after Patch Tuesday) then the WU dlls will be changed as part of Microsoft's updating process. I am comfortable with that. To be honest, I wouldn't be particularly uncomfortable with them updating a component that is designed to ensure that WU works properly when I DO choose to run it - but I can understand why people who have set it to download & notify, or not to download at all, might feel a bit miffed

Yep. Merely stopping the service doesn't disable the service. Setting the service to Manual also doesn't disable the service. Only thing that disables the service is by selecting Disabled for the service in the Services MMC.

I've got it disabled on my box as well... but if they managed to find a way around it to update something intrinsic to Windows, as long as everything continued to work OK, I'd not have a problem with it.

Well, that's the difference between me and you then. I take great offense at some outside entity over-riding my personal decisions about my computer. I make the decisions as to what will, or what will not, happen on it.

Besides, the number of times MS has gotten caught just flat out lying about their actions is quite high, and that creates a lot of distrust in me towards them. Trust is earned, not given, and a proven liar is not to be trusted until they prove themselves to have changed their behavior over an extended period of time, at least in my book anyway.

Anyone who lies to me, and I find out about it, is looked at with a very critical eye, and I don't mean that in the sense of just being critical, but as in analyzing each and every statement they make and watching to see if their actions align with their words.

Sorry to get in on this late, I've been away
The affected systems users HAVE made a decision to allow windows to update certain files on their computer
because they have asked Windows Update to DOWNLOAD patches, but not install
this by definition requires windows update to update ITSELF when changes are made to the WU server

Those of you who actually say 'DO NOT DO SQUAT TO MY COMPUTER' have nothing to worry about
    this is also not NEW
WU has done it since it was launched eons ago, if you have been disconnected long enough then you get told to update WU first, but if your always connected and ask WU to download files it will keep itself current enough to perform that task

This is another example of Mountains replacing molehills
the problem is because the press have poorly reported the situation and mixed some of the terms up leading to the confusion around this situation
Hope that helps clarify the situation
