It just depends what your doing, alot of the stuff could be done on your normal system without causing any problems, but i used VMware now and again aswell. You also get a trial version of XP with the 271/272, and a trial of office with the 272 book IIRC.

Are you saying the 70-270 is a natural progression after completing the MCDST Boyce?

    Cheers

Self study mate. Just passed the N+ and am now about to study this one. Distance learning, in my own opinion and of my own experience, is extremely overpriced, under-tutored and mostly full of false promises. Not to be touched with a barge pole my son. The only other training option I would consider would be an on site, classroom based course, though they're not cheap either, and led at quite a fast pace so I gather.

I think so. I did the 270 first and found it quite tricky. Although I was happy with using XP generally and familiar with all the utilities, the 270 expects a fair bit of knowledge in user accounts, permissions, boot/file problems etc.

MCDST will give you a good amount of useable knowledge, a valid certification and prepare you for 270 also - bargain!
