From what ive read it takes 3 core exams and one elective exam for your MCSA, and for a MCSE it takes 6 core exams and one elective.

Now does that mean if I take the 290,291,270 and 284 first will that automaticly make me a MCSA? Then if I want to can I just take 3 more exams and be upgraded to a MCSE? Any input on how this all works would be great, the microsoft site wasnt to much help.

That's right, however once you attain the MCSA with the above exams, these are the exams you have to take to achieve the MCSE 2k3:

    70-293
    70-294
    70-297 or 70-298

    See here for the page.
