    Hi there everyone.

Has anyone seen any books specifically for those of us who wish to do the new 2006 edition of the A+. I'd like to order them this afternoon but need to be sure that what I'm buying is correct.

Could you also tell me what the new exams are and how I'd go about booking them. As I've mentioned on previous posts I like the idea of learning programming is the A+ still a good place to start and could I do some sort of foundation programming cert alongside this or would that be too much work?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Alex

I don't think most of the new set of books are available yet.

For info on the exams look at CompTIA's web site.

While knowing the basics of computers is always a good idea you will find the connection between that and programming fairly tenuous these days. In the old days you were programming to the hardware, but nowadays the APIs insulate you from that!

    Ok thanks Harry.

So as someone that wants to start my A+ what do you recommend I do? Wait for the new books to come out? I also want to do a foundation programming course again studying from home. Where's the best place to start and what books would I need?

    Thanks again.

    Ok Zimbo thanks.

I've just ordered the study material for the CIW Foundation exam and will order the new books for the new A+ exams when they are available to buy.

It depends on how long you think it would take you to do A+. If only a month or 3 then you could order the 2003 objective books and do that exam.

Otherwise you will need to wait.

With regards to the A+ 2003 exam. Assuming that I put in 10 - 15 hours of study in each week and pick up the stuff I'm learning reasonably quickly, how long would it typically take to complete?

It rather depends on your experience and knowledge of PCs in general.

In my case I've been messing about with them both for amusement and professionaly for many years. I took 2 months to prepare for A+ - chiefly because it was the first exam I had attempted in over 30 years! I did about 10 hours per week reading and revising, and taking practice tests.

The MM book has a handy time 'calculator' at the front to allow you to estimate the amount of time required.

    Harry that's a great help.

I'll buy the MM coursebook for the 2003 edition of the exam tomorrow and after completing this then move onto the Net + exam. It's going to be hard work but it's exciting nevertheless!

    Cheers

I suggest you go for the 'All-in-one'.

Find out if there is a bookshop associated with a Uni - either in Bath or, better, in Bristol. Such places often have second-hand books at a discount.

Ok Harry will do! Thanks for all of your help I just can't wait to get started now! Is it possible to still take the 2003 A+ exam when the new one comes out or will I have to finish it before then?

    Last question I promise!!

In the UK the 2003 exam is available until the end of March 2007 (I think). The new exam is now out - so they overlap.
