Sometimes it can be a pain depending on the make of the laptop.

Did you *definitely* take it off the domain? I take it you got the “You must reboot your PC to make these changes” type Windows message after you made the change to workgroup?

    Oh dear! :biggrin

You need to look up how to get inside the machine on the 'net. They are all different. You will need the *exact* model number - not just a vague name!

Then you will need a 2 1/2" adaptor to be able to put it on a PC. Or one of the bare USB adaptors.

Did the laptop have two partitions? If you can boot to command line you could shift all the data onto one partition and reformat the system partition.

You would need to boot to recovery console which will probably need the XP CD, hmmm!

    Running out of ideas!

There is a moral to the story here.

Don't un-join a computer from a domain, where incidentally the user/administrator account details are held on the domain controller in Active directory. Unless you know the local user/administrator log-on credentials which are held locally in the SAM (security account manager). The two passwords may be different as in this case

If you intend to support/fix computers for a living then I would recommend that you arm yourself with a few tools to make the job easier.

    1) A USB HDD cradle as mentioned by Gav in another thread. This makes it a piece of cake to whip the HDD out of the problem PC and access it as a removable disk in a working computer.

    2) A USB CD ROM drive (would be a blessing in this case).

    3) A USB Floppy

You can always temporarily remove the CD ROM/Floppy from your own PC so that you can install the password recovery software on the locked out PC.

    Good idea that. :biggrin

Looks like you have two options cheek.

Sort out a floppy or CD drive so you can use a password recovery tool. Alternatively remove the drive so you can recover the data, you will need a CD drive in the laptop to reinstall the OS though. 8)
