    is it me or is it that, you can fix peoples problems out easily, but when its someone close to you, its just seems a very difficult task... anyway, any more suggestions?

    I’m surprised you were able to take it off the domain, the account must have had permissions to do that.

    If you patch the laptop into a switch and then patch your PC in you might be able to get in by typing \\LAPTOPNAME\C$

    Can't you scab a working CDROM from somewhere and boot from a live disk?

    Ok, patch both your PC and Laptop into the hub.

    On your PC click start and then run. Then type \\laptopname\c$. This will open up the C: drive on the laptop. I’m hoping it won’t prompt you for authentication as your PC and Laptop should be in the same workgroup called ‘workgroup’.

    Actually there is more to it than that. You will need to make sure the I.P addresses are set up correctly. How do you get on the internet? Don’t suppose you have a ADSL\Router running DHCP do you? :biggrin

    Hm - are you saying that you can't log onto the admin account on the local machine? Or that there isn't one?

    If there are *only* domain logins on the machine, and no local then the only thing you can do is break in with something like ERD commander. There are free equivalents of that on the 'net.

    However - using these utils may break his contract with his company.

    Generaly when a company issues a locked-down machine breaking into it is grounds for dismissal. So check first!

    basically can not login in at all, i changed it from DOMAIN -> WORKGROUP and since then could not get back in, as the option dropdown does not come up.

    i would of tried using ERD as previously suggested, but the CD Rom is not working and i have no laptop to nick one out of...

    company policy - they gave him this laptop some years ago, this now belongs to him and has got nothing to do with the company... i only mentioned the company as it was theirs before...

    Ok, so the laptop is getting an I.P address from the router? What is the I.P address of your PC and laptop?

    Did the laptop have any firewall\security software? It might be stopping it responding to ping.

    pc-> 192.168.254.2
    laptop ->192.168.254.242

    the only thing i can think of is the laptoip has sp2 firewall enabled.

    One trick to get the W2k style login is to press Ctrl-Alt-Del *twice* at the name selection screen.

    Note - if the Domain logins have gone, and you have no local login then you have no option but to use the break-in system AFAIK.

    If it *really * has been converted to Workgroup, and the drive has been shared - then you will be able to access stuff - but that is a long chance!

    What is wrong with the CDROM? And why not use a USB CDROM?

    You may now need to mount the drive on another machine, copy all the data off, fix the CDROM, then use the restore CDs to put the machine back to original.
