    Hey guys and gals,

I have an old desktop pc sitting about doing nothing so I was thinking of messing about with it. First off I was thinking of sticking Linux on it just to see what its like and to have a mess about.

can anyone direct me to a place to where I can get to grips with Linux and where I can download it

    Cheers

You should spend some time on distrowatch see what distribution and flavor you like. Then go from there and find forums based on that distribution and get the information you need.

You can get an installation disk on e bay. You could try Linux Mint.

Paying for a Linux installation disk is only worth it if it comes with a nice manual and a huge DVD packed full of additional stuff that would take you ages to download on a slow connection (not to mention lack of a CD/DVD burner or memory stick on which to place the ISO).

Used to be worth it with the SuSE Linux distros, I think I still have one of those lying around. But even a slow DSL these days will net you the download in less than a day.
