    Voodoo.

Just kidding. HP now has a recovery partition that has all the software and OS to be installed.

    nugget,

My question still is unanswered. So Windows XP was pre-installed onto the laptop by HP?

Sorry mate, yes it was preinstalled. When I start the machines for the first time I get the choice to have a German, French, Italian or English install.

I'va just checked and spinrite found nothing wrong.

Yes it is, but if you're going to suggest I should remove it I've already tried it. Whenever I tried to access it, I got error messages telling me the file system is corrupt.

Disclaimer: I do not work for cablestogo.com

    nugget,

How about getting something like the following, plug the laptop HD into your desktop, then run checkdisk on the laptop hard drive?

Thanks for the link and the suggestion. It's actually a SATA drive though. The only thing that would be of use is this cable here (I think), but I've already tried doing this.
