zimbo like you i prefer dell i bought the dell inspiron 9400 with
    1.8ghz duo processor
    100gig hd
17 " wxga screen with true life <<< that was a free upgrade
    1gb of memory
and 256mb of graphics. ( not shared)
    wifi, bluetooth
i paid £1000 for it 4 months ago
and there customer service has been really good.
The laptop itself is very quick and doesnt struggle to run anything even up to date games ( i can play advanced warfighter flawlessly on med setting).
one thing to note with dell though is read what your buying. as i just got a recovery partition on my h/d for an extra £5 could have had the disks.
as for delivery it took 3 days from when the order was placed to it arriving on my door. Personally give dell a call to you might be able to get something free like a bag or basic speakers, although the speakers in the inspiron are quite good with an inbuilt subwoofer underneath. if you want to see the full laptop tech user guide then drop me a line and i can email you the manual (just so you can see all the little extras that are included)
hope this was a little help to ya and good luck on the hunt for a laptop.

Thanks for the info! The one im looking at is the Inspiron 6400
    ntel® Core™ Duo Processor T2050 (1.60 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB)
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
    512MB 533MHz Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x512)
    60GB (5,400rpm) Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW with Software
Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
Sound Cards Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy® ADVANCED HD™ Audio- Trial Version
    Carry Case

Which is going for £547.75 with delivery and VAT included!

Ill get another RAM module from Kingston for about 50 quid (as apposed to 141 - that dell want!)

I dont be running games on it -i will be using it for uni work - maybe playing some music... but i could always get some speakers (not from dell!) - if needed....

Personally I am not a Dell fan, having said that the batteries were Sony, but wait, I am no longer a Sony (think rootkit) fan either. I would put my money, and it is a gamble, on a Tosh or an Acer, that is if I were in the UK or Cyprus. However, here in Oz, I am a Pioneer Computers Australia dealer hence tend to always recommend them.

PS I edited my previous post and added a couple more links

    Zimbo,

I assume you want this laptop ASAP? If you can wait until you are in the UK, Misco sell execellent laptops for very reasonable laptops. Last week they advertised a Toshiba Tecra 1.7M (wireless chipset), 512 RAM, 60Gb HD, ATI graphics for £540 inc VAT and delivery.
