Does anyone recommend any specific Knowledge database software? preferably witha web based interface and preferably free.

We're looking to run one at work on our intranet, repalcing the existing 15 year old system. We dont have any articles for it yet, we're in the process of writing them.

So can anyone suggest some?

I take it you mean not document management like sharepoint services more like a cms similar to a wiki?
