I have a set of 'kitchen pliers' inherited from my mother.

It has gripping surfaces at a variety of radii, and works wonders on stuck screw-top items!

Mind you - a screw-top bottle of wine wouldn't be allowed through the door... :biggrin

They are getting very common here now. To be honest I don't think it matters much, some of the most expensive best tasting Aussie wines are now screw top.

yup, the only criteria for a top are that it's watertight and doesn't alter the taste of the wine. I couldn't care less whether it's cork, plastic or screwtop once it's a decent wine.

Any kind of top is just an obstuction to getting at what is inside. They are all evil.

Was it an Australian wine? You have to turn them the other way...
