    Hi guys,

I'm looking to go into a pure networking role, I dont mind doing abit of IT support on the side but it has to be mainly networks. I've been told to look into Telco's and ISP's. I have been browsing the job sites for a while now but I cant seem to find any "Junior" roles based in london, perhaps im looking @ the wrong places. Can anyone give me a hand and point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks

most people progress from support into Networking, not many people walk straight into networking as it is a job that managers and IT directors require somebody with a bit of background and can prove they know their way around a computer before letting them loose on a network and or servers.

There are a lot of people in the IT industry with certs beyond their experience level, like people with the CCNA and no experience with CISCO gear so IT managers are wary of employing these people the same goes for other certs like the MCSA and MCSE.

    Hi,

I've been working in IT since the age of 16 and i'm still working in IT for large enterprises. I dont really want to progress into Networks via Server Support as I just want to concentrate on Networking. Going to be learning juniper as well soon as soon as I finish my CCIP. I have working Cisco experiance at my currently role (Voice Support Engineer) I deal with servers + cisco.

well I am not sure why you can't find anything then. There's plenty of sites like cwjobs.co.uk and others that will have the posts you require.

You are extremely qualified for a 20 year old, but if you have experience in a big firm I'm sure something will turn up. Try looking toward the IT outsourcing companies. That's who I work for so your Logica's, IBM, ATOS etc. All have main sites in London but data centers mainly in Warwick, on the south coast and Midlands.

I appreciate your ambition, reminds me of myself, but just be aware that in the current market, very few of us get to dictate the precise role we want. You may have to take a jack of all-trades role as I have then work on specialising, once you have your foot in the door so to speak.

    Good luck, Jim

Thanks for the input guys, yeh I know i have quite alot of certs for my age. I started at the age of 16 as soon as I finished my GCSE's I managed to get a job working in an small IT shop, while most of my friends carried on doing their AS Levels and then A2. I gradually moved to a larger company offering Desktop Support this time and then by 18 I got my first break doing Server Support for an IT Outsourcing company. Not long after I got grabbed up by one of europes largest Telecoms company and I have been here for around 2 years now doing Voice Support for Investment Banks / Stockbrokers / Hedgefunds very known and large clients in the finance sector. So I do have 4 years experiance overall. I'm hoping to finish my CCIP by the time im 23 (I turn 21 next month :biggrin:biggrin:biggrin:biggrin) and hopefully be a CCIE by the time im 27. I'm looking to start learning Juniper next year once I get a good foundation of Cisco. It's easy to study when your young mate, no stress, no money worries, no kids and no wifey :)

You can be jack of all trades but master of non, which is something I dont want. As i'm currently in a job I wont be moving untill i find a really good role, i dont really want to get back to server support just to be able to get into networks as its nearlly a year since I have touched that stuff. I've been applying for jobs mostly in the Investment Banks / Hedgefunds perhaps thats why. I'll look into IT Outsourcing but im not that keen on them unless there big companies such as Rackspace, Capita, IBM etc quite a few outsources in London tend to be abit of a "Micky Mouse"

    Any more advice is appreciated.
