I have found this job advertised, sort of in my local area http://www.totaljobs.com/JobSearch/...,fk,fl&From=/JobSearch/LocationJobSearch.aspx

The position seems to be maintaining motor vehicle diagnostic equipment for some sort of roadside techs.
My question is would this job be likely to provide experience that I could use to further my career at a later point down the line in the way a support helpdesk would or would I be back at square one.

Currently I work for a main car dealership and have assumed responsibility for maintaining, updating and diagnosing our diagnostic equipment for some time now. It says be qualified to C & G level 3 which I am, just in motor vehicle repair not IT lol.

Mmmm... unfortunately, I doubt it. Other than the troubleshooting method, which is almost universal, it doesn't sound like a skill that would transfer into anything PC-related.

Thats what I wasnt sure of, see as it stands that job would suit me pretty well, but I want to be looking at the long term aspect as well and if im making the switch of career and making the sacrifices then i dont want to be repeating it 2-3 years down the line

thanks for your replies BM, you confirmed what I suspected really. This job would be like taking an element of what I already do (a part that I dont mind doing) and specialising in it but although that would be ok and I would be doing more computer stuff, its a bit too specialised to gain transferrable experience.

My opinion is but one of many. But I am glad that I was able to provide another aspect for you to consider. :)
