    Hey,

Ive heard that some contracts in danger zones of the middle east for a support tech can be over 100k for a years work. I'm Ex forces so been there already, to Basrah. Though certainly not on that kind of dosh mind you!! Ive still got my clearance in place so id be very, very tempted...

Any one know of, or have been offered a contract to work in Iraq or even afghanistan as an IT bod. Or sites that may be usefull for finding available contracts?

Just think, do a couple of years out there and then bang! your mortgage free..

Have seen base support roles for that money and SA jobs for the same money. Seems the real money would be in cable installing in building the infrastructure of the place. Only got this info from google and word of mouth through guys at work who have 'heard' of these massive pay offs:eek:.

Problem is that any sites that have come up on google for example have been through american companys. Would be ideal if I could get hold of a UK contact. Or anyone who has had dealings with contracts in Iraq present or in the past.

Got offered a £700 pd contract in Saudi once, I said no to that and thats not even a war zone. Not been tempted to go to a war zone myself, I can still remember that bloke who had his head cut off...

I was once asked to go to the balkans when they were at war, they offered no incentives above standard pay, promised british soldiers would look after me, needless to say I said no.

Some Oil and Gas workers regularly make £1000 pd setting up procesing plants in war torn areas.

Many commerical drivers were tempted by such sums to perform haulage in Iraq, they were given standard trucks, no escorts or convoy support, consequently many of them are now dead.

I can't really see much demand for first line support in a war zone.

Theres lots of ways to reduce the term of a standard mortgage.

Fair one mate, maybe not soley for 1stl/2nd line of course but the likes of SA's and network admin would in demand. Maybe there are ways to pay off the mortgage in half the time but less than winning the lottery or a windfall from your dear ol granny your not going to find a better money spinner.

(if I could find a contact for the opportunities over there of course... )

Why not become a mercenary then ? :D Loads private security firms out there.

I saw one bloke put his house on red at the casino, paid off his mortgage in one spin of the roulette wheel, now thats big stones, but even he didn't stick his neck out over a Taliban knife !

Theres the risk /reward equation, you can reduce a 20 yr mortgage down to 4-10 years with lower risk options, there have been many programmes on TV about this.

zebulebu has a point, Iraq is now another outpost of the American Empire, bit like Hawaii but surfs not as good and theres more bombs, wonder when they are gonna put another star on the flag ?

    www.dangerzonejobs.com ?
    www.alliraqjobs.com/ ?
    www.jobs-in-iraq.info/ ?

I'd have thought your best chance would have been to network while you were over there...

Many contract jobs abroad do not pay any better than in the UK, the main advantage is the lack of income tax in the middle east. To get this you have to stay out of the UK for an entire tax year.

for the money, it's a chance to earn more than you do here, for a few years of your life and come out with a nice bit of money saved away for the horrendous British summer and winters. (if you save that is) I imagine whilst your out there, there really is not that much to spend it on.

My company has many contracts over in the two main theatres currently (Irag and Afghanistan), and their wages are nowhere near this suggested figure - just over £35k actually (tax free though).

Had several friends do a tour or 5! (Did 2.5 years in one case over in Iraq)

Even been offered the role myself, but didn't want to do at least 6 months (which was the requirement) - though wouldn't mind doing it for the experience for 2, maybe 4 weeks, but not a chance in hell for any longer!

LOL - the amount of gear some of my mates brought back - electronic equipment galore! Especially with a stop over in UAE or Qatar!
