I suppose that your career path depends a lot on what you (A) are currently doing, and (B) what you'd like to be doing.

Since IT is such a varied career it is often difficult to find out about a predefined path.

So, to cut a long story short, and answer your question, no I don't know of any!

    Someone else might though. :biggrin

The BCS has a good personal development portion of their site (SFIAplus) available to members, I believe that the standard SFIA guide is freely available to everyone, see here.

BM's suggestion about this place is spot on - you won't find better advice on your career path than here. That's because most everyone on this forum has either already been where you are now or headed down your road!

Since you're already in the industry, have experience and have been promoted (if I remember correctly) recently, you're already way ahead of many candidates that will be applying for similar jobs, so you're not likely to have to worry about getting an entry level job and, I'm guessing, are probably looking now to decide what area you want to specialise in - am I right?

If so, then PM me, I may be able to help. I end up being the unofficial mentor at most places I work and have often provided careers advice to peeps who are undecided which area they want to specialise in (comes with the territory of being a bit of a jack of all trades I guess!). I've worked in many different areas (it took me about seven years to decide that Security was 'my thang' and, prior to that, I did 2nd/3rd line support, junior management, technical project management, DB admin, Network Admin and Sys Admin roles)

I've just taken one of the helpdesk bods under my wing at work - he wants to get into a security role in the future, so I'm showing him some stuff over the next few weeks to see if he feels 'right' about it. Its not just shoulder surfing either - I'll try and tease out where his core skills lie, what his strengths and weaknesses are and, at the end of it, will be honest with him and see whether he's cut out for it. I'll also be going through his CV with him and giving him some advice on which recruitment agencies to target.

There are agencies out there that will 'help' you decide on a career path, but, tbh, they are only in it for themselves at the end of the day, and don't give a shite about placing people in roles that they are totally unsuited to because they only really care about their commission.

So let me know if you're interested - I don't charge anything and don't want owt in return. If neither of us was married I could get a bit lairy and ask for a poledance when I finally make it to a CF meet, but since your boyfriend and my wife would probably kick my fat arse up and down the block I'll settle for a beer!

Thank you Zeb, your advice would be greatly appreciated. I shall PM you when I've put together what I need to ask (which may well have to wait until the weekend as it's quite busy at work)

Lol with the pole dance, but you're right, my *husband* (wooohooo - we got hitched at the end of last month) and your wife would deffo have something to say about it!! :D
