Is anyone pursuing any other kind of training?

    Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone is doing anything other than technical certs to improve their CV or employability?

I've come to the conclusion of the last few years that the industry is changing and now not only technical skills are required but business skills. If you can show you understand the business and can bring value to that you are more likely to be employed (for most roles) than someone is 100% technical and doesn't understand the business.

So i've been working on my certs but also recently added a Level 2 certificate in Team Leading and ITIL to my Business GNVQ's attained at school and next year i'm looking to at Prince2.

I've also just enrolled in a Certificate in Business Finance - a long distance, take your time kinda course.

I'm hoping this combined with the GNVQs in Business, ITIL etc will stand me above other candidates when combined with my certs.

Is anyone else doing anything not quite so IT related?

I understand time is precious but i was just wondering....!

At present the only training that I'm doing is technical, mainly in trying to get to grips with Windows Vista ( ).

In the past I did a Foundation Degree, which whilst being mainly technical did teach me a lot of 'soft-skills' that are important to use in the workplace.

Other than that I have done a course in 'ICT Strategic Management'.

I just done a course in BBC technology 1... not going to help me in any job really unless i work for the BBC as a Camera operator, or in Production.

Company put me on it but it not really releveant to job i do. missed the important bits i need to know.

Apart from that im doin 70-271 and looking at anything else that might be interesting whether it be for work on just personal.

I agree with you Matt that the game is changing and people are looking for more skills than just technical ability. There is no way I could do my job (one man band) if it weren't for the fact that I have been around the block a few times and have learnt a lot about the way businesses work. My short stint of 14 years as a department manager helps a lot. I have a pretty good grasp of accounts, sales, service and HR. You need a skill set in various areas of business to be successful. Never sit back and be idle when you could be enhancing your employability by learning *all* the ropes.

I'm trying to strike a balance between certs and an 'academic' qualification. I did two years with the OU a while back, and I'm doing another next year.

Not at the moment but I have always had an open mind towards other training. I did several scientific courses at my last job (voluntarily) as well as first aid and fire marshal certificates. I was looking at doing an SPA (the A+ of rock climbing) but have never got round to it, although I might in the future.

The difficulty with working in IT though is that because it is constantly changing you have to be constantly learning to stay up to date. Finding the time to do this is difficult enough without looking at other things!

A course in Business IT might be worthwile though.

    Hello mattwest,

If you have the experience to match your certs then I would employ a damm good CV writer and then look at you interview technique.

Bit of a sniffy post isn't it? He didn't say he's having trouble getting a job, just that he thinks it's worth doing further training which, as a training consultant, I'm sure you'll agree with.

    Hey there,

I wasn't really starting this thread because i needed any help with CV writing or interview technique it was more to do with what people are doing to improve themselves.

We see lots of threads about people saying "A+.... what next?" but even though i enjoy my techie lifestyle i do have management aspirations.

Therefore not only am i persuing technical certs but also developing my business skillset. I was just wondering if other people are doing anything else to improve their employability other than just pure technical certs - business courses, certs we haven't heard of? etc etc

I've just had the courseware through for my certificate in business finance... got to do it now its here but it reminds me how much i hate figures!! :blink
