A month or two ago, work advertised a new Operational Services team being created (one of many re-jigs of the department). These people would be intermediaries between IS and the Technical Authority Team (6 people specialising in different high level aspects of the Infrastructure, eg AD and Exchange, Security, etc). This new team would carry out day to day maintenance and monitoring of systems, as well as support calls which reached that level. They would also implement changes identified by the TAG team. The roles in this new team more or less map directly to the TAG teams positions.

Having worked with two of the people who are in the running for one of these roles (dealing with AD and Exchange), ive developed a bit of an interest in this field, so I decided that i would apply for the job. Reading the jobspec i wasnt particularly qualified for the job, but i figured it couldnt hurt. And besides, if nothing else it would register my interest.

The other two received emails confirming their interview dates a few weeks back, whilst i received none. To be honest i didnt think too much about this (maybe they were waiting to tell the unsuccessfuls after the interview stage, just in case). Imagine my surprise when i received an email this afternoon telling me that unfortunately the meeting rooms in the scheduled location were all booked out, and that we were changing the interviews to another location!

So now i have until Friday to try to learn as much as I can (im expecting at least a few technical type questions) about these systems and our internal usage of them. Im pretty sure that they are under no illusions that i dont have the experience or qualifications, but if i can make a good enough impression, i may at the very least impress them enough to get me involved with these types of jobs, and a possible future promotion.

Of course, if they asked me to interview, willing to put up the travel expenses, theres a possibility that i could end up with the job too!

Wish me luck guys. I think im going to need as much help as i can muster.

Sorry did I miss something there? You didn't get an email inviting you for an interview but today you recieve an email telling you that an interview is being held elsewhere? Did I get that right? If so I'd check up with HR to see if you have indeed got an interview and you weren't sent that room one by mistake.

If I've completly missed the point, then GOOD LUCK!!!

nono, you didnt miss the point. apparently HR sent the email out, but their email was playing up so it didnt actually send (or they sent it to the wrong person).

I definately have an interview (confirmed it with the sender who is on the panel). good thing they sent it though or i wouldnt have known.

well, the results are in, and the outcome is..... not good!

I got feedback from the interviewers, which all seemed pretty positive, but the main issue was that with my current experience they thought i would struggle to cope with the workload of such a senior position.

    Never mind though.
