Do you have a non-domain local logon? If so that's the one to use when away from work.

If they haven't set that up then it may not help anyway.

It sounds as if 'work' has rather screwed the system, and not considered home use. I think my approach would be:
    1) see the admins and tell them that it dosn't work from home (so why give you a laptop? :biggrin )
    2) If that fails get a USB/Ethernet adaptor and see if that gets round the problem.

1-i'll email one of the techs tomorrow to see if theycan help and i;ll post it here... all so called "techs" on my floor who go out on site (or so they say) are given a laptop... plus vpn connection back into the office to synch all our data when we are working at home (yeah right!)

Sometimes a 'political' answer works better than a 'technical' one! :biggrin

In this case - "office politics". i.e. getting on good terms with the local 'powers that be' so that you get extra help and allowances.

At my place I have no rights to all sorts of things, but because I make a point of being helpful and friendly to IT and Networks I get all sorts of extra privileges! Mind you, it helps to be fairly knowledgeable and have demonstrated that I won't abuse those privileges!

Just ask your IT guys to give you the domain administrator password and stop all this lock down nonsense! :biggrin

Seriously though, if you can create a local account with local admin rights you should be able to change the DNS server I.Ps.

If your logging on with your cached domain profile you will be restricted in regard to what domain security groups your user account is in and any group policy applied to your user account and computer account. 8)

As far as they are concerned, i have admin rights, i can do around 90% of amendments to my machine, only little tweaking here and there that can't be done...

Does anyone know why they would of disabled Defrag??

Well - unless the machine is very full, I'm not convinced that defrag is as useful as many claim!

And you can make a horrible mess of a machine if you power it off in the middle of a defrag. Perhaps they did this because of past problems, and are trying to reduce the calls to their line?

Just guessing but they might have disabled it because it can take forever to run and whilst it is running the computer will grind to a snails pace.

Then find out why the DNS is hard-coded to 10net rather than letting DHCP sort it.

ok, so i added my self as a local administrator (no lock down  :biggrin) under my account ...

    DNS Settings,

So when i get home, i just click on "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and when i go back to work, i retype the old DNS settings???

    EDIT:
can i add my DNS Server address to the list, so i dont need to faff around? ...or would this make matters worse?

    sorted people!

i added it to the DNS Server address, under Advanced TCP/ip settings...

    Next:

How do i find what is hodging up my internet bandwidth?

i scanned for viral and spy/adware nonsense all clear.

i am downloading, but its been limited to 50k for the application and uploads are limited to 8k (u-torrent), yet it seems that my browsing the net is like if im using 256k and not 2mb
