installing windows 98

HI, i am trying to do re install an O/S and have come up against a problem. I have partitioned the hard drive,set it as active and formatted it, on restart i am not prompted with the 3 expected prompts 1 start windows 98 set up from CD
i only get the start computer with cd rom support prompts. Could someone please tell me what i am doing wrong?

Not clear just how you have done this. Win98 will do it's own fdisk and format on a clean drive.

I would suggest that you boot the machine making sure the CD support is loaded, put the CD in the drive, change directory/drive to the CD and run setup.

the drive had windows 98 on it so i re partitioned the drive then formatted it, now all i get is the C:\> prompt.

 

Oh - that isn't quite what I understood you meant by

Does the computer boot with CD support?

Do you have a proper Win98 (or Win98SE) boot disk - as prepared by Windows itself?

yes, its the original one i had with my first PC

 

So boot with that - selecting CD support.

At the end of the boot it will report the CD drive letter.

Type that letter with a colon - eg D:

Insert the CD of Windows

Type setup
