Pheonix has been helping me out with this, but thought I'd throw it out to get everyones thoughts on this.

I have a PC with one hard drive.
    Decided to install another hd.
I've set the original hd as master (originally it was set to CS).
I've set the new hd to slave.

In the CMOS, it won't autodetect any of the hd's.

The boot order is set to boot from hd 0, the old hd on the master settings.

I just get the error 'Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter'

I'm really getting a little bored :x of this lol, I'm not a hardware guru, but I thought even I could have managed this.

    Alas, it's being a pain.
I need all your valuable input so I can sort this out asap.

    Thanks:!:

    Edit: Newsflash

Oh my word, Windows XP Pro has booted up.
The only thing I've changed was to reconnect the mouse, which I had unplugged earlier and hadn't reconnected.
I can't believe I've been rattling my brains this afternoon and yesterday, and it came down to that:!:

    'allo Flex,

I saw this post, and grinned. For something simple like hard disc autodetect, always had grief with this. Sounds like what you suggested with master and slave pins is OK , but I've learned that the main drive should have a pin which reads 'drive is master, slave is present' or something similar. That usually works, but THEN!! it seems the position on the IDE cable that the drives are on seems to have an effect too. From memory I think the end of the cable is master and the middle is slave.

Just do what I do and mess about with all permutations, sooner or later it WILL work, trust me!

The jumpers were set fine and the IDE cables were in correct positions, ie slave in first one along, master at the end.

I will definitely get a decent case for my next pc, so I can fix and install things easier.
I've ripped my fingers to shreads scaping along the side of the metal case and so forth. Not my cup of tea this lark, I have to say

I have a wonderful case that has loads of room to work in, rounded metal edges and NO screws at all - everything is fixed by twisting plastic brackets.

I've lost count of the number of folks' PCs that are currently running with my blood and body parts inside (hey - I was learning, I tell you  )
