This is not related to the exam but a Exchange 03 question:

Hey guys, I've been stuck the entire day trying to get a working Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition running on a PC called DC2 which is the second domain controller.

    It's a test platform with currently only 2pc's DC1 (Domain Controller) 192.168.0.2 & DC2 (2nd Domain Controller) 192.168.0.3.

When all the FSMO roles are on DC1 setup /forestprep should be run on DC1 right? And domainprep on DC2? I've twice succeeded in a installation both while running forestprep & domainprep from dc2. The 1st time while DC1 had the schema master FSMO and 2nd time while DC2 has the schema master FSMO (this is how it's running now). Everything seems working but I can only access exchange tasks & tabs on users in my AD Users & Computers on DC2 and not on DC1. I'm wondering now if this is default behaviour and it's just not possible to add mailboxes to users on more then one DC or something went wrong, I dont have any error messages in my event viewer on neither DC.

Just for reference the CURRENT dcdiag texts from DC1 & 2:

Right so if I read this right you have exchange installed on DC2 not DC1. If that's the case then you will need to install the exchange tools on DC1. The exchange tabs on ADUC can only be seen when the tools are installed.

incidentally, running exchange on a DC is not normally recommended. Doesn't mean it can't be done but not normally in a production environment. LINKY

IT was always my passion but I finished school when I was 19 as a mechanic. Something I dreadfully dislike and I spent my time from 19 till 25 working as operator on factory plants. My devision on my last job got closed and with that came the possibility to let you get assisted in finding a new job or actually go back to school. So well my old employee is now basically paying for my 1 year schooling for network administration and it's kinda the best thing that ever happened to me since I'm top of the class on every exam and it every project, just a shame I took the wrong choices 10 years ago.

Anyways, back to exchange. I'm gonna do a final reinstall of the entire project and place the Exchange server away from the domain controllers. It just provides to big of a slowdown on the dc's and I dont like putting the dc's under such stress, specially since we are working on virtual machines.

Now I wanted to know, what are the common practices for administering exchange with the active directory users mailboxes. Is it common that a administrator will install the Exchange System Management Tools on all DC's or is there any other more common and/or better way to create users in AD that have a Exchange mailbox without having to install those tools on each dc. (Would connecting to AD Users & Computers from the Exchange server with a MMC Snapin give the same results as if I would do this on the actual DC with system management tools installed?)

Not being funny John, but I recommend you buy the Exchange 70-284 book to answer your questions.

We are hear for advise, however, I feel that you have had ALOT of help from myself and others and you need to either start finding out the answers for yourself or just doing a basic configuration.

If possible try and have exchange on its own server.

As for the admin of exchange it will vary depending on the organization.

I'm only doing very basic things with Exchange atm, I'm learning so many different things at once because it interests me. However going in to depth in Exchange is atm not within my time possibilities. Yes I've had alot of great help but also have put everything in to practice to actually learn and see and understand it. I'll look for myself during the exchange deployment on a seperate server.

I'd just like to point out that almost all my questions that I asked here are out of the scope of my schooling or they might come by later (Although I dont think so). I'm just learning on the fly while I practice things, sometimes I ask something before trying like for these exchange questions. Sorry for that, but I've been working on my lab for this (revision 7 now :p ) for the last month and I want to finish it just perfect now. Maybe to perfect for what is expected and time is running out. Hence maybe the silly sometimes simple questions.

I'll figure it out but hopefully wont screw anything up :biggrin

Make a backup and then play around, thats what I do when implementing new things in a lab.
