Hey guys, can I just find out from your vast experiences - in your opinions is there any specific type of IT jobs which involves the most manual dexterity and physical work?

I want to aim to specialise in an area which involves a lot of design, installation, testing and deployment. 50/50 split between physical and virtual work. Do such positions exist? what experience would I need to get and which way from entry level would I need to steer my career towards?

And please, no joke posts. Please try to be serious. And yes I do know I need experience in basic positions like desktop support before I advance to specialised IT posts.

hardware engineer/field service engineer - delivering hardware to sites, installing hardware, making sure the hardware works. Can include repairing laptops, desktops and servers too.

You will find some hardware engineer roles only require basic certs such as the A+ and N+ to get you can also find these jobs listed under trainee on most job sites.

These jobs seem rare looking on job sites.

I want to do exactly what you have described - but mainly with servers. Would I need to aim my career in the direction data centers/server farms etc?

Does data centre/server farm work involve what I described?

sort of you would be mainly looking at data warehousing jobs although doing anything with servers n stuff wether its building them and setting them up or just mantaining them usually requires normal experience first

here's some field service engineer roles although most require experience but you could apply and say your interested in being trained up http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/JobSearch/Results.aspx?Keywords=field+service+engineer&Sort=0&JobType1=10

Sounds to me like you are trying to look for something too specific at the moment. It's rare any one role will be exactly what you want, but they can evolve over time.

My job includes all the things you mention, but I don't always get to pick what proportion the different jobs will be in. I'd rather be developing our network and servers for the most part, but that's just one aspect of the job and other things get in the way of the stuff I'd like to be doing all the time.

No job is perfect though and you take the mundane along with the interesting.
