    Yes. 8)

Oh, wait, that question wasn't directed towards me...

I certainly *do* learn new things as I write about them. My only advantage is that I have gotten to work with a lot (but not all) of this stuff out in the "real world". The things I haven't worked with, I've gotten to work with things that are similar to them. That experience will come in handy.

Like Trip said, you have to know a little something about a technology to write about it. Could I write a book on Vista? Yep! Could I write a book about Exchange? Probably. But could I write a book on Citrix? Not likely.

That said, I *have* successfully written Citrix questions for practice exams... to me, writing smaller chunks about a narrow focus is MUCH easier than writing a whole book. The HARD part with practice exam writing is all the nuances in developing a masterful question and explanation... it looks deceptively easy.

I love getting paid to write (and learn). I love teaching things without having a real classroom. It's incredibly rewarding. I'd encourage anyone who wants to launch into a career writing about technology... just remember, the more experience you build up in the "real world", the easier it'll be for you to write about it later. :)

I haven't seen you in a while... if that's what I have to do to get you to show up, I'll take my chances. 8)

Besides, then I won't have to get off my lazy butt and send you a copy of our book. :p

Funny thing is... I wrote the previous posts BEFORE reading Freddy's post. :p heehee! I know Freddy's just kiddin' with me. :)

No, I know I don't know everything. :) What I do know, I try to share with others. Might make me look like I know everything (or might make me look like I think I know everything  ), but I don't. There's plenty of questions on here I can't answer (or don't know anything about), and in those cases, I tend to keep my mouth shut. :shtum

I get annoyed when people use txt spk all through their post. I know alot of people in the UK will have spelling mistakes, grammer mistakes, etc, which is fine. It doesn't bother me. However, when people write messages on forums as if they were writing a text message then it makes it harder to read.

Another forum that I'm a mod on (www.astraownersnetwork.co.uk but the server is down until tomorrow night as it's having a massive upgrade) they have a rule that text speak isn't allowed.

Is it just spelling and grammar??

Or is it because a lot of people can't touch type??

If there were no letters on a keyboard to show their positions could you still write a letter?? Do you know where the letters are on a keyboard without looking at them?

I Work in a place where there are Touch Typist, I often have to replace cheap keyboards because the letters (transfers) have worn off the keys. The touch typists don’t look at the keyboard! What I am trying to say is you can't put spelling errors on the forum down to poor communication skills it is also poor typing skills and emotions.

How many of you have misspelled a word because at the time you were upset or angry???

Your mind is racing, unclear and unable to think straight, do you really think you will be able to type correctly just because you have perfect spelling?:blink

Granted TXT speak on a forum is bad and I only use it here as a joke! But, if we are going to get nit picking, then what about internet language?? IMHO, LOL, WTF. We use it because it's quick, but is it also down to being lazy??8)

I don't think anyone is referring to those types of errors, Cheeky. We all make those. It's the consistently bad spelling, consistently using the inappropriate hononym, writing without punctuation, etc..... I think that is the kind of behavior this multi-page rant is all about.

A agree with Freddy on this one.

Although familiarity with keyboard use should develop over time (and over use!) that isn't the mistake that's in question.

But we'll find out soon, if I get the present I've been hankering for, for ages:

OK. Since this thread is all about words, spelling, grammar, etc... I have to admit I learned a new word from creating one of my posts.

No cheating now. No Googling this.

Who knows what a homophone is? I didn't.

 Wow, I would never have though about it being from that. I just assume anyone who is in IT and specially on forums daily would have good typing skills. I have never heard of touch typists before I just assumed everyone typed like that.

Monkey, go to ebay and get yourself a mavis beacon typing software. It does not have to be the newest one out either so that will save you money. But it will have you up and typing your letters and numbers in a jiffy. It won't matter then if your letters come off or not because you won't ever have to look at your keyboard again.

QFT = Quoted For Truth. And he mentioned me because he thinks I started the trend. And I guess I did, around here... I merely passed it forward from another forum. 8)
