Which area would you specialise in?

I'm currently in 3rd line support and studying for my MCITP:Server 2008. However, In a few years I would need to progress into something with more money and was tempted to stay in Microsoft. i.e Exchange, as this is a natural progression from my current job.

I feel it pointless to study CCNA and will have to get a entry level position first. So, the point of the thread is to see what everyone else thinks?

Cisco? Exchange? SQL? or anything else? shoot...

I would be thinking about moving away from stuff that can easily be "cloudified" and into stuff that cant. From what I have seen lately the mantra "if it moves, virtualise it" is becoming more of a reality. There will always be plenty of systems that cant be cloudified but can be virtualised so I would (and am) get a heavy dose of virtualisation tucked under your belt.

    It depends, I guess...

I don't want to specialise to much in one item/product, I'm still a "generalist". However saying that, you could say that I "specialise" in the following:

    1. Microsoft Technology
    2. Small to medium businesses (SMB)

And I'm delving more into the management side and training...

    All three?

Seriously though, there aren’t as many jobs going to specialise in one particular product. However I have seen some good Sharepoint consultancy jobs recently.

No reason why you can’t just focus on Microsoft products just now – plenty to get up to speed with!

I would say as long as you're interested in more than one technology go for it... These days consultants can specialize in a few technologies... Personally, I am trying Exchange, VMware, and Storage... but that's something that I need to work on.
