After deciding to and study for a career in I.T I was wondering what the average age is for a person to start a career in I.T.

    Thanks

Depends what your education is ...

straight out of school, after uni, after postgraduate or a late career change.

I started when I came out of Uni at 24-25 (went down the Ph.D. route)

I am 30 now and started when I was around 24, I didn't go through the university route, I just had a real interest in IT and an agency rang me offering me a 1st line position, it was very very basic 1st line but gave me something for the CV to give me a step up.

Started in IT at 17 after dropping out of college. I'm now almost 32, and I'd say I'm doing alright for myself in the IT world.

I have to say though that along the way I've had my up's and down's, thinking 'why do I bother?' but ultimately I enjoy what I do and the environment I work in.

I'm 29 wanting to start a career in I.T, do you consider my age to be a problem?

I must have been about 31 when I "fell" into IT. Plenty of people I work with started later in life.

I was 19 when I got my first job in IT.

I don't see being 29 an issue at all, if you work hard and have a real passion for IT then you'll soon be overtaking those who don't.

Not at all, IT is one of the more "forgiving" fields when it comes to establishing a career.

the more older you are the mature you are

so its good to be old.

Lot of people who started old excelled and grew in I.T much faster than the new fresh young I.T starters.

For me, it was about the 22 or 23 year old mark. This was after 5 years trying to get into IT and well before the recession that just passed.

I got good A levels but decided I didn't want to go to uni so flitted around various jobs for temp agencies before getting my 1st IT job when I was 20. Pretty much 22-27 was spent doing my degree part time while I worked in IT. I'd recommend this route to anyone as I effectively had the best of both (minus the 3 years being drunk and partying ha ha!)
