    Hey guys,

I'm a 24 year old, immensely disillusioned arts and humanity student who recently graduated. I've rather unfortunately discovered that my degree isn't worth the paper its printed on. :( So after some introspection, and suffering in retail for 5 months or so, I figure my best shot at a career is to exploit my love of computers and computing in general.

I've come to this forum in the hopes of getting some advice on where to start, on what certifications are worthwhile in terms of employment, I'd like to work in the maintenance side of things, for server maintenance, systems engineering, something like that. Believe it or not, I enjoy fault finding and troubleshooting (I like puzzles :p).

Well, I've thrown myself on your mercy guys. Anyone want to help?

    Welcome :)

Without any prior experience your best bet is to start on the CompTIA A+ and self study, then book the exams when you're ready - this'll be good for entry level jobs, and you can even start looking for them now mentioning you're studying them, don't wait till you have them to try and find one as experience counts loads in IT.

Working within server maintenance will probably be a few years down the line once you've had exposure to basic IT systems and then move into a more advanced role looking after servers.

    Best of luck :thumbleft

Agreed - the A+ is the right place to start.
