    False

Why do people look down at 1st line and think they're a bunch of idiots?

Reality is that's where a hell of alot of the IT industry start and work their way up, I certainly did that route, and can say you need a fair bit of knowledge to even start the role, not just anyone can do it. My 1st line was dealing with DNS config's aswell as some networking, hell even some basic sccm/sms work.

I don't think there's any luck in how tklnrg got the role, he's obviously been employed becuase they thought he can do the job. Fair play to him, working with active directory is a good skill to pickup

    Bit of jealousy maybe?

    See my response above.

Plus the fact that some people who work on first line actually put in a bit more effort than other people and some bosses actually take note of that extra effort and in doing so it kick starts their progression.

Technically you could call me first line support but in reality I actually do what a second and third line tech does aswell as first line. You see I was the guy who said that I would come in a Saturday at 7 am, sit in a crappy room testing network cables which a dodgy cable tester until 18:00pm, I was the guy who sat there all day making sure the network migration had gone fine and everything was functioning how it should. Doing that gave me more responsabilty and more money.

Anyone who just sits there and does their job without trying to progress is destined to stay in that job and not progress and as yoda would say thats why you fail:D

There are many people on here who would resent that comment. A lot of people start their careers in 1st line support since its a more predominant starting position than say IT technician and then progress upwards.

1st line can teach someone many aspects of IT that they dont learn in other IT positions.

I worked 1st line supporting Win98/2000 and the experience gained was invaluable. 50 calls per day helps build essential troubleshooting skills that will stay with you for the future and help to communicate technical direction to people of all levels. You will learn more spending 3 months on a 1st line helpdesk than you could ever hope to learn with self study or training course.

    41 years old.

Enough certifications to constipate a buffalo.

    BS in Chemistry.

13 years of IT experience (almost 20 years if you count my time as a Telemessaging Operations Analyst) as a Field Service Tech, Systems Administrator, Network Administrator, and Content Developer/Author.

EDIT: I also do not believe that help desk / 1st line support is for losers. Most of the best techs I've ever met started out there.

when I look at the actual company listings, that is my job title. But to give some perspective, this week already I have been crawling under computer desks, migrating SQL databases under supervision, attempting to edit scripts in powershell, and logging into switches/routers to edit very specific settings.

So as you can see I'm in 1st line support but slowly being trained into a sys admin position, althoughf or some stupid reason they have me as a junior sysadmin. Theres stuff thats way over my head, but I'm under a lot of supervision and told to ask if I don't know. I'm not sure what they have planned for me, but I've also been thrust into creating documentation and researching on how to improve it.

I get to the office at 830 and leave at around 630 or 7. Being put through the wringer, lol.

Good skills, keep at it, it'll pay off big time later down the line :thumbleft:

Showing a keen interest in new things goes a long way in IT if you're prepared to do the work, which has worked out for me

It's publically available info but to put it in one place:

    Age: 29
    Certs: MCP, Security+, Network+, A+
    Edu: BSc. Computer Science
Exp: Officially working in IT since 2003; Personally since we got our 386 DX-25 in 1990., I'm ignoring mucking around with the BBC Micro B prior to this.

The official progression would be go something like:

    1st Line
Systems Admin (then add SLA Contracts Manager in the mix)
    Senior Systems Engineer (Current)

If you want my self-appointed title then I'm the "IT Bloke who makes a damn good cuppa!"

25 years, a high-school degree in economy, and a complimentary course as PC technician/network engineer.
After a year I ultimately found a job as second-line support engineer and then I expanded my knowledge by experience/certifications.

Some can find it ridiculuous but im a senior engineer who can be found rarely in my country. Also, think me a nerd who had never lost even a year during education off born to this time. Nevertheless, it is so pitiful that high-school graduates may pass guys like me hence order is absolutely broken.
