I have always wanted to live in a country like that, not Switzerland but Luxembourg, Belgium or Denmark.

We have 15+ sites and I work with everything from an Index telephone system, (including swapping phones out), printer support/repair, desktop support, all networking, backups, PDA - smartphone and mobile phone support, fax machines and stationary ordering to OS and hardware Server support, peronsal responsibility for VMware ESX servers, Vreplicator, GPO's, our Endpoint protection etc etc etc blah blah blah blah.. and what's the price I hear you ask? A very reasonable (for any company) under 22k wage a year.

Blimey, when i read the skillset i was expecting to see a higher salary than that. Make the most of the experience and when the country is on the up, ask for a a pay rise or start looking elsewhere - assuming you want to that is!

Is contracting even a good option for me, i thought it was only the best IT people who specialise and have like 10+ years of experience who do that.

All depends on your experience and skill set. You could go contracting after 1 year if you wanted but I wouldn't unless your an expert blagger and have nerves of steel!

You have the experience to match your certs obviously. Isn't everything more expensive in London? As you say your company is getting a bargain! My friend is a Civil servant and gets a weighting so a few grand extra because he's in London.

It’s unlikely you will land any networking type contracts tbh due to how much experience you have but maybe it’s something you should look at further down line.

Just landed a 14 day contract at work to migrate a messaging infrastructure to Exchange 2007. Works out at £600 a day so not too bad.

Looks like things are looking up despite all the doom and gloom as I have another two definite network migrations lined up and hopefully a domain restructure as well if I get my way. That would be at least a two weeks work with a full server refresh.

Still wouldn’t mind a network manager job though like the good old days, sick of working on other peoples networks! :biggrin

I was employed as 1st/2nd line, on 17k, then within weeks my skillset shone through and I basically took on 3rd also.

Long story short, I've been strung along for over a year, told I would get an 8k rise soon, but now the economy is the way it is, that is totally out of the question.

Anytime wages are mentioned, there's the 'people should be grateful to have a job in this economic climate....' jibe. I guess it's the same for most people right now.

Mine too but it's still not enough.

Too right it's expensive here. We seem to have one of the highest living standards in the world and we get paid what amounts to a small fortune but when you see how expensive it is the it all equals out in the end.

Well £600 a day that is about £550 over the national minimum wage. I have never thought about contracting before, might be good to gain experience.
