I have added a poll to the thread, please let me know if you want the amounts changed but I felt that was a good break point for salaries.

    Started out on £19,500 (contracting @ £10.00ph) in 2010ish

My last role was about £28,000 as Desktop Support, the current role the offer was almost £10,000 more.

You started out on contracting? I thought contracting work required extensive experience?

I also started out on a 10p/h contract for my first "real" IT job - stayed like that for 6 months and then they took me on perm.

Yeah I guess, it seems to earn the 30k+ you have to be very very skilled. Thing is I dont even think IT pays well, end of the day its a complex industry and people really dont appreciate the knowledge required so 30K seems cheap to me when I know retail managers getting 40k.

I was paid 24+shift at the last place

At a potential new place, they're paying 30-34K up north. I rejected a position down south, offering a massive 45K, but I figured that the rent would be 10K more too so...swings and roundabouts really. That 45K figure is after the shift allowance too.

I believe the position up north allows you to do shift work too. I haven't actually got the job, but it's just a case of grabbing the recruiter

I started with a three month contract too :) Brought the salary to 28.8K/annum...but not quite as well there's stuff you can claim doing contract work. This being said, if I did contract work, I'd never work for the previous company again :)

sad thing is mate, you don't always have to be really skilled. I know plenty of poorly skilled people on more than that. IT is like any job, sometimes you're appreciated, sometimes you're not

People tend to get more for time in service, sometimes because they become more experienced, sometimes just because they turned up.

I wont lie, money is the biggest motivator for me, if there was an easier way for me personally to get more money (thats legal) I'd drop working in IT. But right now its all I can really do to earn a good wage; I dont believe Im in deep love with it like some of you guys on here.

I don't think you need to be super skilled to earn 30K+ ? I'd say you need to be super skilled to earn 45K+ THe salary darn sarth at an ISP comes to about 45K after shift allowance and the bonus. That also isn't so skilled imo, but that's a case of "shite every one is going"
