IF you work for a company that provides I.T Support for clients not staff, what is the largest client that you support in terms of number of users of that client that require support? What is the smallest? what is the average?

Also are the clients predominantly from certain industries, if so which one's, or is it very diverse?

The reason I ask is to find out which size and kind of companies have their own internal support staff as opposed to those that require external support.

Thats not an easy question to answer, because there is no fixed point at which companies switch from outsourced to internal support. Some small companies hire a single internal IT manager, responsible for all support, etc. Some large corporations still outsource their support.

Its all about the perceived cost/benefit the individual companies decide upon.

When I worked for a company that provided IT services to companies, we had everything from single-person "companies" to huge worldwide corporations (Bridgestone-Firestone). So there's really no "average". Any company that lacks IT support of one type or another is a candidate client.

Every user is a client/customer for IT Services, regardless of if they are internal or external.

Our dept supports 1350-1400 internal users, but we also support 3 external companies.

As others have said the controlling facctor in thic is individual companies cost/benefit analysis. We use both internal and outsourced support for different things here (50 users) depending on situation.

Theoretically 105,000+ users spread over 330+ sites ... but each site deals with their own support, either buying it in or employing their own staff ... I just herd cats!

I have a few clients that I take care of as part of my job, and they have about 20-50 employees each. All are in the financial services field.

Bear in mind many small businesses without dedicated IT staff are running Small Business Server which has an upper limit of 75 users/workstations.
