Modey - if you don't mind me asking - how did you manage to get into lecturing? Its something I've always considered as a sideline - not necessarily in Computing, my first interest was in Geology and that's what I originally trained in, so maybe that might be a possibility for me too. I would never give up IT and, tbh, it's probably a bit daft mentioning it in a thread which is ostensibly about partners moaning that they don't spend enough time with them :biggrin but its certainly something I might look into actively in the next 2 or 3 years - even if I'm just teaching on a voluntary basis at night classes for an HND or something at the local college.

There's nothing about my recent career that requires me to work late...exactly. Well, not at my day job, anyway. When writing a book and working a day job, the only time to write is in the evenings and on the weekends. While historically, the kids have called me a "computer addict" and felt neglected when this has happened, the missus hasn't. She *does* complain things on her "honey do" list don't get done because I'm working on the computer.

Her job requires that she works many evenings and I have to say that I enjoy the peace and quiet around the house when I'm trying to concentrate. I know that sounds terrible, but after working around people all day long, it's nice to have a little "down time" at home when I don't have to interact with anyone.

As far as the statement that "woman nag"...well, they do. I think it's a traditional method of a woman expressing that her needs and wants aren't being satisfied in the relationship. Actually, I just think that women communicate those sort of things more verbally than men and men call it "nagging" because we don't want to hear it. I know that my wife says she needs to "process" things that she's going through and to that end, she'll repeat the same information to me over and over and over and over and...

It drives me nuts. From my point of view, once she's imparted the information to me and I've "got it", I don't need to hear it again. From her point of view, it's not imparting a series of facts or events to me, it's "processing" the information as much as she needs to until she comes to some sort of internal resolution about it.

It still drives me nuts, even after I understand the dynamics of what she's doing. I often have to bite my tongue and not say a word while she's processing a situation yet again and again.

As far as my working late (when I have in the past), if I'm earning extra money, it's not an issue with her (most of the time). It has only been an issue if I was working and missed some sort of activity involving the children. They're all grown now so that happens very infrequently. After 20 some odd years of marriage, we've managed to strike a balance to where we don't have to be around each other 24/7 in order for it to be ok. If we're together, we do things together. If we're apart, we each have our own activities. It all works out.

I like your way of looking at things :) it's not 'nagging', it's 'processing'.

As far as Martin is concerned it's phrased as I'm 'doing his head in' and my generic response is he can 'bugger off'. lol. But, 'nagging' aside, we've never actually rowed over his working late. Being as the whole incident has already happened, I would achieve absolutely nothing through dragging him over the coals about it. I'm sure, when we live together, he can spend all the time he likes at work.

I dont work in IT yet and I don't have a girlfriend (which is good) but I do work daft hours, and get called in at stupid times of day etc.

But if I did have a gf and she nagged, then I would have to tell her this is my career, like it or lump it.

Girls just nag because thats what they do.

Kind of by accident I guess. Ken (WagnerK on CF) used to work at the local college as part of their IT support team. We both now work at a different place nearby, but one of the guys who organises things over at the IT Focus centre (they specialise in professional IT qualifications as part of the college) used to work with Ken. Ken started doing some part time lecturing for them a couple of years ago and I thought it was worth a try so I signed up to do cover work last year. I wasn't needed then, but I now teach a class over there. It's part time at the moment and is good experience I think.

We both tend to end up doing quite a lot of unpaid prep work for the classes we teach which sucks sometimes, but I guess it would be different if we worked their full time on a salary. Hopefully it will look good on the old CV anyway. :)

my wife is normally pretty cool, but she does get in her moods. i mean working late and what not doesn't happen often, but say for instance last weekend we implemented a new e-mail system here at work and we had some issues so it took longer. needless to say i started getting the attitude and my response is to tell her to piss off because if she's agitated that i'm not spending time with her then bitching at me sure isn't the way to get me to want to come home. :biggrin as i said before normally i've got the most chill wife a guy could ask for, but sometimes... sometimes.
