I think I stumbled upon CF from a Google search. As to what I was searching, I am not sure, but it's definitely been a while!

    Similar to Soundian and Millsie.

Was trying to move into IT. Found an IT course for a about four thousand quid that was like the A+, but not internationally recognised and sort of promised a job, and thought it sounded like a fantastic idea. Came here and was quickly straightened out. Spent about £100 on an old PC, £25 on The Book (Meyers), £150 ish on the exams, and passed both parts first time.

... but then I spent £3,726 on celebratory drinks... You cost me a pound CertForums. A Pound!

I joined after i'd been working in IT around 1 year, and was looking for resources/support as i began studying for CCNA. The massive procrastinator i am, i didn't actualy get this done until 2 years later, but it was fun in between! Have moved jobs once since, and possibly about to again.

Still find this place great for just browsing through peoples posts on life in/trying to get in IT!

Always good to hear people being in the same boat as you isn't it mate. We seem to have a mix of people already in IT, and those wishing to get into IT. I wouldn't want to work in any other industry myself.

CF IMHO is still the defacto certification advice site and is just as helpful and friendly as ever.

You occasionally do see less of some of the longer serving patrons, but I know this is a byproduct what we are here to do, based on my own experiences. I joined this site without a cert to my name and between me passing the XP exam in 2009 and me passing the VCP and CCA in 2012, my workload in my career has increased exponentially, thereby reducing my free time for certs and forums. That said, I always come on here to see if I can offer advice, or just have a laugh.

    Jim

**Edit: For the record, I have two certifications I plan to study for and the first place I searched is this site. No bias, but because it's such a handy site. Just this week I've had a free vSphere 4.1 HA and DRS ebook on my Kindle and a free 2 day tutor led Server 2012 course thanks to posts on Certforums. Back of the net! :)

Reading that makes me realise all the effort to keep this place running is worth while. :)

I started this forum as mentioned before on the 23rd of June 2003 using some free web space I had from my ISP at the (plusnet). I was a student with a training provider called NITLC at the time studying CompTIA A+ and I had asked a few questions on their members forum but didn't really get a great deal of assistance so I turned to the internet to look for help and found that there wasn't a great deal of certification forums out there and the ones that did exist here US based. I had the web space and I had the time as I was only working a part-time job so I decided to learn how to create a website. With a few blatant plugs on the NITLC forums we soon gained few core members and things rolled on from there. We didn't even have a real name back then, it wasn't until a few weeks in that certfourms.co.uk was purchased (you still read the thread where we decided on a name).

Since then I've had numerous threats from training providers and solicitors, an been harassed at work and at home with letters and phone calls from disgruntled companies claiming we are damaging their business and that I'm going to be dragged through court unless I remove certain content. I've had court orders to remove content with hosts suspending or taking down the site until I comply. We've been hacked and databases wiped in the process but we've come back after I've spend hours and hours restoring the site to normal service and making improvements, upgrades and not so long ago a fresh new look and design.

We've seen relationships blossom and relationships lost, we've seen members pass before their time and some old before it too. :) We've seen promotions and demotions, career advancements and career changes. We watched as members become married, divorced, parents and even publishers.

There have been times when I could have just given up, folded in the towel and said goodbye, but I'm glad I didn't.

To know that CF still serves its purpose in assisting other helps me remember that it does have a place and it is valued.

I came here when I was doing my A+, was gone for a while job hunting, and while working in the field, but I have generally lurked. I'm becoming more active here again, because I'm just about on top of my workload these days (for a few months a year at least) and want to help ensure other people get a leg-up from this site like I did.
