Hi everyone, my name is Nick and yesterday I decided what I want to do with my life! Im getting made redundant in 2 weeks and have been unsure for ages what I wanted to do - all I knew was I wanted a change. I love playing around with my PC and whilst I have no training, I have always changed my own bits and pieces of hardware as required. I also get asked by friends to fix their PC's when something goes wrong and usually I can suss it out although would love to learn more about the workings of everything.
So I checked out basic qualifications for I.T. jobs and found this forum which has been key in my decision. I have ordered Mike Meyers book on A+ (as per numerous peoples advice on here) and am going to self study. Im really excited (sad I know) cos for years I havent known what I would do after my current job in a call centre and know its clear. I know it wont be easy but at least I can start working towards something. I looked at using Skillstrain but have decided against it after reading peoples thoughts on here - wish me luck ;-)

Sorry to hear about your redundancy.

You will be pleased to hear there are lots of people on the forum who have changed career (including myself).

Changing career is not going to be easy, whichever job you are aiming for, but with determination, the will to work hard and firing off letters to everyone who might be able to offer you work - you can do it.

Hello again, I got my All in One A+ book last week and have been studying away - Im going to follow the advice on this forum and read it through once then start again taking study notes. Im on chapter 6 and have to say there's an awful lot to take in but im still up for the challenge. Been doing alright in the end of chapter reviews (all been about 8 out of 10 apart from the CPU one where I got 4 out of 10 lol - extra study required on that one I feel!). The book suggests memorizing all the different CPU specs - I take it thats good advice?
